Get the Best With Powered RC Cars
by Shane Dolby
Radio controlled cars, often referred to as just RC cars, are a fun pastime for many kids and adults. There are plenty of RC car clubs available in many cities around the country, and you will find that the cars are extremely realistic and fast. If you are considering getting into the building of radio controlled cars, there are a few things you will want to take into consideration first.
You will probably find that you will get more selections and prices on gas or electric powered RC cars if you shop around online, although many local stores carry them as well. Do a bit of online fact finding, especially if you are new to the RC car hobby, to make sure you find a car or boat that you are going to like, and to make sure you are paying the best price. Only purchase cars or trucks from reputable sources, and make sure the site you buy from has a secure ordering process. You will want to make sure they ship fast, for a reasonable cost, and that they provide customer service if it becomes necessary.
Although some are battery powered and others are nitroor gas powered, the battery powered cars tend to be more popular, especially with new people to the hobby. This is because these cars, powered with an battery pack, are easier to maintain and operate. In fact, they are probably also the more popular than the nitro powered RC car fans as well, because they are so easy to own and maintain.
Beginners often will start with a ready to go RC car kit. This means the car is pre-built, and you will have everything you need in order to get going. When purchasing an RC car, it should have a motor, the radio and receiver, and an speed control device, which is what will send the power to the motor from the batteries. You could also choose to buy a build-it-yourself type of kit. When you choose to build the car yourself, either the essential items are in the kit, or you will be buying them separately.
When an RC car has an electric motor, you should allow the motor a tune up period to avoid wear and tear on the engine, and also so that you can get the best from the engine. Probably the best way is to just run the car with the wheels not touching the ground; with the control pulled about a quarter of the way, for about five to seven minutes. This should be enough to get the brushes fully seated and allow the engine to reach its potential. Keep in mind that you will have to repeat this process each time you change the brushes.
About the Author
Most people who own gas powered RC cars, especially those who race them competitively, find that after changing the brushes about five times, it is time for a new motor. Of course, this can vary, especially if you are only running the car as a hobby instead of racing it competitively. There are also ways that you can tune the electric motor of an RC car so that you can get better performance and speed.
